What are Online Focus Groups?

Online focus group InterfaceUnlike traditional, in-person focus groups, online groups take place online in a "WebEx"-like environment with the moderator, all participants, and all observers interfacing over the internet inside the WebEx-like interface. There are advantages, disadvantages, and important precautions to consider in deciding the type and style of research you want to do.

Advantages of Online Focus Groups

  • Recruiting
    • Broad geographic area for a recruit.
    • Better, more qualified participants.
  • Scheduling
    • With no travel, particpants have much more flexibility
  • Conducting the research
    • Multi-threading, parallel discussion without participants biasing each other can be used to advantage in how questions are structured
    • Costs are slightly less because of reduced facility rental and no travel costs. Other costs are similar.
  • Easy to do multiple sessions per day to compress the research time

Disadvantages of Online Focus Groups

  • Participants are not visible, so auditory and body-language responses as well as interaction between the participants is missing.
  • No control over who may be lurking with and biasing a participant
  • No audio or video record, just a text transcript
