Abstract:

This white paper provides an insightful and comprehensive, value proposition and TCO analysis  of data deduplication across medium to very large-scale backup and disaster recovery implementations. It compares IBM's ProtecTIER deduplication system to comparable traditional tape-only backup and DR practices and to disk-based backup and virtual tape library implementations over an extended 5 year period.   Here are some of the key lessons learned:

  1. 1.The value proposition for deduplication is so strong that failing to add data deduplication to a disk or tape-based backup or disaster recovery strategy can no longer be justified.

  2. 2.Any organization concerned with reducing cost and improving efficiencies must first look at Backup and DR costs.

  3. 3.Backup and DR practices remain the top IT storage OPEX cost center across most organizations.  Applying deduplication to backup and DR is the simplest, most transparent, cost effective improvement available today.

  4. 4.Deduplication offers a 50% lower TCO for Backup than Tape and a 40% lower TCO for DR than Tape.
