Abstract:
This 2006 joint project of the SNIA and ARMA was the first to identify and define the critical role of a multi-departmental, collaborative team as the foundation of a successful information governance program. As the introduction states:
Collaboration between IT, RIM, legal, and security professionals is the new standard of excellence in managing records and information, enhancing organizational efficiency, mitigating risk, reducing operating costs, and ultimately providing organizations better value and return on investment.
I wrote a follow-on article, “Collaborate or Die” that illustrates the importance of this approach to information governance and enterprise information management. It states that if you want to successfully solve the complexity and cost crisis in the datacenter, you have to change current practices and begin working together as an organization. Our contention as the SNIA Data Management Forum, in publishing this paper is to emphasize the importance of managing and operating the datacenter based on the value-of, and requirements-for information to the organization. Step one for successful information-based management, is to collaborate with all information stakeholders in order to define the requirements for information, so that it can be managed properly over its lifecycle.
